Landowner Assistance: Land Stewardship

Each of our contributers invests time, energy, and money into educating and assisting the Flathead community with living in one of the most unique places in the world.

  • DNRC: Assess Your Fire Risk

    Schedule a visit with a local fire professional to assess wildfire risk to your home and land.

  • FCD Landowner Assistance Program

    Flathead Conservation District empowers landowners to be better stewards of natural resources.

    This program provides landowners with technical support and cost-share assistance to implement conservation practices on private property.

  • USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service

    Federal land management and funding assistance for farmers and forest landowners to prevent soil erosion, improve wildlife habitat, improve irrigation, and protect from forest fires.

  • Septic Maintenance Reimbursement Program

    Funding assistance is available to offset the costs of septic maintenance (pumping) in some priority areas of Lake and Flathead counties, including proximity to surface water (500 feet or less). Check your local Conservation District’s website or contact them to find out if you are eligible.

  • Planning a project in or near a stream?

    If you are planning to work in or near a stream, you must get a 310 permit first. It's free. Visit your local Conservation District to find out what permits are required. Careful planning helps prevent degradation of our stream and rivers.

  • Flathead Pollinator Initiative

    Through the Pollinator Initiative, Flathead Conservation District provides participants with free wildflower seed to build pollinator gardens. Pollinator gardens provide habitat and food sources for native pollinators and beneficial insects including bees, butterflies, and moths.

  • Flathead Rain Garden Initiative

    Learn about nonpoint source pollution, its effects on our local surface waterbodies, and how individuals can take action to help reduce this pollution and mitigate these effects… by planting beautiful rain gardens full of native plants.

  • Forest Stewardship Workshops

    Montana State University’s Forestry Extension Program offers forest stewardship planning workshops during the summer to assist you in creating a personalized forest stewardship plan for your property.

    Learn about your forest, what tree species you have, how they are growing, what animals share your forest, fire risk, and more. As part of the course, you will have a personalized site visit with a natural resource professional.

  • Flathead Master Gardener Classes

    Flathead County Extension offers Master Gardener Courses in horticulture and urban gardening online throughout the year. Whether you are an aspiring green thumb or a seasoned gardener looking to enhance your skills, these courses cater to a diverse range of gardening enthusiasts.
